Evonik’s HYACARE ® Achieves ChemFORWARD SAFER™

Evonik is pleased to announce that HYACARE ® has met ChemFORWARD’s rigorous evaluation of human health and environmental criteria for safer alternatives through the organization’s SAFER program.

“The SAFER designation will help provide customers with confidence about the suitability of our product as a safe alternative for skin moisturization,” shares Arnoldo Fonseca, Global Head, Bioactives Segment, Active Ingredients, Care Solutions at Evonik. “Evonik is committed to developing and promoting solutions that are safer for both human life and the environment. The SAFER program embodies both values while basing its assessment on a scientific approach.”

To be designated as SAFER, all chemicals present at or above 100 ppm have been disclosed and assessed by a qualified toxicology firm against ChemFORWARD’s GHS-based hazard methodology. To be sure that it is inherently benign for its intended use, data gaps must be filled. A lack of hazard data does not mean that a chemical is inherently benign.

The SAFER program’s goal is to ensure human and environmental safety, to build trust throughout the supply chain with third-party verified transparency, and to help suppliers stay ahead of regulations and consumer trends. “SAFER helps suppliers communicate trusted, third-party verified, globally harmonized data to all of their stakeholders,” Stacy Glass, ChemFORWARD co-founder & executive director.

“While chemical hazard assessments are just one part of the decision matrix, they have traditionally been expensive, inconsistent, and housed on private systems. ChemFORWARD’s globally harmonized shared repository breaks through these barriers to provide cost-effective, comprehensive, scalable screening of ingredients for suppliers.” Glass explains. Fonseca agrees, “The process for review of our product was systematic and straightforward, which made it easy for us to have our product reviewed.”

“I’m happy that HYACARE ® is now a SAFER designated product. Through the HYACARE ® certification formulators can be more confident about the credentials that our product brings. Not every formulator can take the time to understand the toxicology and environmental aspects of the ingredients they use. The SAFER designation provides a common language backed by science.” shared Fonseca.

High-level records for all SAFER materials are publicly available on ChemFORWARD’s website. Detailed assessment records are housed on ChemFORWARD’s Chemical Optimization Platform available by subscription. SAFER listings are amplified by some of the leading supplier marketplaces through partnerships with Novi Connect and Covalo.
