We’re Hiring: Safer Chemistry Project Specialist

Over the past five years, ChemFORWARD has created a first of its kind shared, globally harmonized repository of chemical hazard data with a focus on safer alternatives and we tested transaction models that align business drivers for supply chain transformation. After a successful start-up and pilot phase, we are well-positioned for growth and impact.

The new full-time Safer Chemistry Project Specialist will report to the Science and Safer Chemistry Lead and work collaboratively with other members of the ChemFORWARD team as well as our industry and NGO partners to provide support for new and existing projects.

We are looking for a smart, curious, collaborative, researcher and project manager who is seeking to apply their skills in chemistry or applied science toward global impact. You will fill a unique role on our team and with our co-design partners that will accelerate our mission.

About You

  • You bring enthusiasm, creativity, an open mind, and a fresh perspective to help strengthen our culture and build on our success

  • You will lead with subject matter expertise to support key ChemFORWARD objectives, including supporting user-centered design with key stakeholders from industry, government, academia, NGOs, and more

  • You will gain real-world experience in the growing field of green chemistry and toxicology

  • You will apply your professional skills to end toxic chemical exposure and enable safe and sustainable design

Responsibilities

Support industry initiatives for identifying safer alternatives in prioritized sectors, functions, and chemical classes. This team member will support industry collaboration efforts to identify chemical hazard assessment (CHA) roadmaps and identify priority data gaps for CHA prioritization in areas of interest through research, interviews, and collaboration.

Prioritized initiatives include safer chemistry solutions for consumer electronics design and assembly, consumer product packaging, food contact, polymers, process chemicals, and more.

Research hazard and physico-chemical properties of PFAS and safer alternatives. This critical work helps to define our agenda and our work with partners. You will review information on PFAS used in consumer products (initial focus on electronics) with a particular focus on class-based hazard similarities. Through this work, you will support the identification of minimum dataset(s) and associated thresholds for identifying safer alternatives to PFAS, leveraging existing “safer” definitions (governmental, NGO, academic).

Support ongoing safer chemistry and data trust/repository projects. This team member will support growth and scaling of the ChemFORWARD data platform and data trust by contributing to new projects as they emerge. This may include, but is not limited to: ChemFORWARD platform enhancements, troubleshooting, onboarding new sectors, research projects to identify safer alternatives via CHAs, etc. A keen interest in emerging sectors, processes, and chemicals of concern will set a successful candidate apart.

Research and writing in support of guidance and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) development. ChemFORWARD was created as a response to the marketplace need for faster, less expensive, higher-quality, flexible information on chemical hazards and key properties that can be used for multiple purposes (vs. one certification or compliance program). With the primary infrastructure in place, scale, and efficiencies are our next big challenge. Reducing cycle time, lowering cost, and innovating to extend the life of chemical hazard assessments will all be critical to our sustainability. As a member of the Science Team, you will develop and maintain technical and user-friendly documentation of our core processes.

Qualifications

  • Degree(s) in chemistry, chemical engineering, toxicology, materials science, or related field. Degrees in chemistry-related fields are highly preferred. Master’s degree or recent Ph.D. preferred;

  • Work or research experience related to electronics manufacturing and/or process chemistry used in electronics is preferred. Polymer, additives, coatings, and adhesive, or product formulation experience a plus;

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and present information in a concise and informative manner; a willingness to develop data analysis and presentation skills;

  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills;

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work simultaneously with short and long-term priorities;

  • Ability to work in a virtual environment; sometimes independently, sometimes as a team player.

  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship.

Position Information

  • Flexible Location – ChemFORWARD has employees located throughout the US

  • Excellent full-time benefits, including comprehensive medical coverage, dental, and vision options

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Paid vacation and holidays
