A NEW WAY TO DEFINE SAFER

ChemFORWARD SAFER was designed to help suppliers demonstrate human and environmental safety and build trust with their customers based on a rigorous, third-party process. A new model of data-sharing is cost-effective for individual suppliers while advancing collective impact

YOUR PLAN TO DISTINGUISH YOUR PRODUCT AND INCREASE MARKET SHARE

Process Overview

We help suppliers to verify and amplify their "ingredient" raw materials that meet ChemFORWARD’s rigorous human and environmental criteria for safer alternatives

ProGram Requirements

Disclosure Requirements

Disclosure to Third-Party Assessor under NDA

1. All intentionally added ingredients
2. All impurities and residuals at or above 100 ppm

Substances Subject to Review

Assessment and Screening Requirements

  • Full ChemFORWARD chemical hazard assessments (CHAs) are required for all constituents intentionally added and those present at or above 1000 ppm (use existing data from ChemFORWARD, procure new CHAs as needed);

  • Screening is permitted in lieu of a full CHA for impurities and residuals present at or above 100 ppm and below 1000 ppm:

    • D and F hazard bands do not qualify for SAFER designation

    • ? hazard bands will qualify for the SAFER designation

Building Trust in the Science of CHAs

ChemFORWARD’s shared repository of chemical hazard assessments is unique and designed to instill trust and promote continuous improvement:

  • Built on proven existing hazard classification methodologies (starting with GHS, C2CC). ChemFORWARD is NOT a new CHA method.

  • Qualified Assessors own and maintain the data they create and participate in a community of practice

  • Peer review/verification by independent toxicologists who assure assessments are comprehensive, consistent, and credible - thereby increasing user trust

  • A technical challenge process that promotes continuous improvement and results in a definitive dataset that justifies having one CHA per chemical ● A policy for reviewing, incorporating, and protecting unpublished private data into CHAs

  • Governance that promotes inclusion, transparency, and best practices

Program Process

1.

Subscribe and Pre-Screen

ChemFORWARD utilizes a unique data-sharing and benefit-sharing model to make the evaluation of ingredients cost-effective for individual suppliers while accelerating collective industry impact.

Starting with a $2,500 annual subscription allows you to:

  • Pre-screen your product for SAFER eligibility

  • Find safer alternatives (if needed)

  • List one qualifying product as SAFER

  • Accelerate your chemical management efforts while saving time and money with consolidated hazard data on over 130,000 chemicals

With a rapidly growing repository of chemical hazard data and safer alternatives, you are benefiting from the contribution of others while utilizing the best available science to advance your brand.

2.

Disclosure & Assessment

A - Disclosure

  • Supplier contacts a qualified CF Assessor to review trade name ingredients

  • Enters into NDA with third-party  assessor of your choice

  • Provides ingredient disclosure to Assessor based on program rules

    • All constituents intentionally added

    • All constituents at or above 100 ppm

    • Assessor requests appropriate documentation (attestation, test results)

  • Assessor provides a cost estimate to verify disclosure and assess the product based on constituents disclosed.

B - Assessment*

  • Assessor searches for existing chemical ratings (hazard bands) for all chemicals present in the ingredient at or above disclosure and assessment thresholds

    • Assessor uses existing hazard ratings for chemicals already in ChemFORWARD

    • Assessor produces new CHAs and posts them in ChemFORWARD for chemicals without ChemFORWARD hazard bands

  • Assessor determines if the ingredient qualifies for the SAFER designation (all chemicals have C or higher hazard bands and meet the additional requirements)

*See program guidance document for further details including use of proxy assessments

3.

List Safer Ingredients

  • Approval and Submission

  • Supplier reviews the final assessment and recommendation for ChemFORWARD SAFER with the assessor before it is released to ChemFORWARD

    • Supplier has right-of-refusal to stop the process

    • Assessor submits approved results to ChemFORWARD

  • Trademark license agreement

    • Manufacturer signs license agreement for use of ChemFORWARD SAFER marks

4.

Amplifying SAFER Ingredients

  • We will work jointly to create a news item  for PR and Social media distribution

  • SAFER products will be posted and promoted on the ChemFORWARD platform and website

  • SAFER products will be pushed to our B2B Marketplace partners: Covalo, ChemSec Marketplace, and NOVI

  • Supplier uses the SAFER trademark in marketing and communications
