HP JOINS CHEMFORWARD AS CODESIGN PARTNER, STRENGTHENING LEADERSHIP IN SAFER CHEMISTRY FOR ELECTRONICS
HP Joins ChemFORWARD as Co-Design Partner, Strengthening Leadership in Safer Chemistry for Electronics
HP Inc. has joined ChemFORWARD as a codesign partner, lending decades of experience in chemical optimization in the electronics industry to ChemFORWARD’s work in scaling safer chemistry across supply chains.
HP will contribute its expertise to ChemFORWARD and other technology leaders in an electronics-industry initiative to create a collection of targeted chemical hazard assessments. The work will produce and assemble comprehensive information on safer alternatives to toxic chemicals used in items such as computers, printers, and cell phones, and make the information accessible to product manufacturers throughout the supply chain.
“As a leader of several worldwide environmental policy and compliance programs, we have identified the need for a globally harmonized repository of chemical hazard data to empower the entire supply chain. We are working with ChemFORWARD to realize this goal,” said Jennifer Reece, HP’s Materials Leadership Program Manager - Sustainability & Product Compliance.
“I am honored to have HP offer its experience and leadership to our work in creating a globally harmonized repository of chemical hazard assessments,” said Stacy Glass, ChemFORWARD’s executive director. “HP has been a pioneer for a generation of programs which have successfully replaced hazardous chemicals and focused the industry’s attention on the importance of informed substitution. Their partnership truly demonstrates the irreplaceable value of collaboration.”
HP, which in 2020 claimed the title of the world’s most sustainable PC portfolio, according to the Green Electronics Council’s criteria, has reported that 98.5 percent of the total weight of its products are made up of safer alternatives to chemicals the Chemical Footprint Project labels “high concern.” Since the early 1990s, HP has phased out hazardous chemicals including beryllium, chlorinated flame retardants, and phthalates, Chemical Watch reported.
ChemFORWARD’s codesign partners are leaders from diverse industries which share a commitment to creating a marketplace where chemistry is safer and the potential of circular design is fully realized.
HP joins other tech leaders including Google, along with leaders from a variety of industries from textiles and footwear to building products. HP’s participation will be integral to the transformation of cost-effective, verified and actionable chemical-hazard data, affording a level of informed decision-making never before available.
