Safer Chemistry Impact Fund Awards First Grant
ChemFORWARD, a science-based, non-profit organization, will manage the Chemical Hazard Data Trust to accelerate a science-based, data-driven transition to safe and sustainable product
Introducing CleanPackage: Supporting Safe + Circular Materials for Packaging
As packaging design advances to support recyclability and compostability, safe building blocks can be hard to pinpoint and hazardous chemicals can be difficult to avoid. To help companies tackle this challenge, The Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) is excited to launch CleanPackage, a database of verified safer alternative packaging materials.
Groundbreaking collaboration between leading cosmetics companies will advance safer chemistry for the beauty sector
ChemFORWARD, a science-based, nonprofit organization, announces "Know Better, Do Better," the first-of-its kind collaboration of industry-leading beauty companies Sephora, Ulta Beauty, Credo, Beautycounter, and The Honest Company, as well as ingredient designer Inolex and the global nonprofit organization Environmental Defense Fund. These stakeholders are banding together to promote the use of safer chemistry and improve chemical hazard data to enable informed decision making.
ChemFORWARD Shares Safe + Circular Packaging Materials Pilot Results
ICYMI: “Beyond PFAS-free Packaging” Webinar Recap
The Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) and ChemFORWARD recently shared the initial results from the Safe + Circular Materials Collaborative. This year-long supply chain collaboration explored the challenges of circular packaging and solutions to accelerate the transition to safer alternatives.

ChemFORWARD’s Plastic Additives Optimization Tool Expands to Include Trade Name Materials - still freely available!
Since its launch in April, ChemFORWARD’s free Plastic Additive Optimization Tool has helped hundreds of formulators and designers check the chemical hazard profile of over 1100 plastic additives and find safer alternatives.
ChemFORWARD Announces Verified SAFER Flame Retardants Now Available by Trade Name from Clariant and FRX Polymers
ChemFORWARD and SPC offer plastic producers free access to chemical additive safety tool
ChemFORWARD and SPC offer plastic producers free access to chemical additive safety tool
A tool to help plastics manufacturers identify safer additives is being made freely accessible to help accelerate the development of safer single use plastics and other recyclable materials.
Apple, Google, and ChemFORWARD join forces to drive support for safer flame retardants in the Electronics Sector
Apple, Google, and ChemFORWARD join forces to drive support for safer flame retardants in the Electronics Sector
ChemFORWARD, in collaboration with Apple and Google, is pleased to announce the availability of a comprehensive set of chemical hazard assessments for phosphorus-based and other non-halogenated flame retardants used in electronics. The goal of this work is to help companies move away from flame retardants with known health and environmental concerns towards those that are well characterized and verified to be safer.
MEET THE COMPANIES LEADING A “START SAFER” REVOLUTION
When ChemFORWARD began in 2018 they knew one of the most pivotal moments would be transitioning their work from assessing single chemicals to assessing trade name materials. After all, if they wanted to transform the supply chain with safer chemistry, they would need to make it easy for formulators to find verified safer alternatives and easy for raw material suppliers to assess and verify their safer offerings. While it took three years and an unprecedented supply chain collaboration, that moment is here.
November 3rd Webinar Recap
On November 3rd ChemFORWARD was part of the Resources and Tools to Accelerate Adoption of Safe and Sustainable Chemistry webinar in conjunction with ChemSec and Apple.
ChemFORWARD invited to become a member of the Clean Electronics Production Network (CEPN)
Guest Post: Confused about chemical safety? You’re not alone.
Every chemical should have hazard data publicly available. Hazard is an inherent property of an ingredient, and refers to its ability to cause harm, whereas exposure is how you come into contact with the chemical. (Hazard + exposure = risk)
ChemFORWARD to Support Manufacturers’ Compliance with San Francisco Safe Chemistry Policy
SF Environment has expanded the flexibility and usefulness of its pragmatic policy governing flame retardant chemicals. The agency will now accept ChemFORWARD methodology alongside GreenScreen scores to provide transparency around chemicals.
Nike Sponsored Portfolio Offers Alternatives to DMF, Facilitating Safer Textile Production
ChemFORWARD is pleased to announce the launch of a portfolio of safer alternatives to dimethylformamide. Clothing and shoe manufacturers including Nike have been eager for a less toxic replacement to the inexpensive, abundant and effective chemical, which has been used for decades to produce synthetic leather. ChemFORWARD has assembled complete chemical hazard assessments for 10 solvents that can be used instead of DMF.
HP JOINS CHEMFORWARD AS CODESIGN PARTNER, STRENGTHENING LEADERSHIP IN SAFER CHEMISTRY FOR ELECTRONICS
HP will contribute its expertise to ChemFORWARD and other technology leaders in an electronics-industry initiative to create a collection of chemical hazard assessments. The work will produce and assemble comprehensive information on safer alternatives to toxic chemicals used in items such as computers, printers, and cell phones, and make the information accessible to product manufacturers throughout the supply chain.
