ChemFORWARD and Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute Announce Partnership to Accelerate Better Materials Chemistry
ChemFORWARD and the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute are working together to embed the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard Material Health methodology into the ChemFORWARD repository.
ChemFORWARD, which is building the first globally harmonized repository of chemical hazard assessments and alternatives, will use the C2C Certified Material Health methodology to offer companies a uniquely powerful tool for optimizing the material health of their products.
The initiative allows ChemFORWARD to embed the C2C Certified Material Health methodology into several features of its cloud-based application, including:
● Embedding the forthcoming C2C Certified v4 Restricted Substances List into the free MaterialWise screening tool to enable manufacturers to quickly identify whether their product contains any substances that are subject to any of the listed restrictions.
● Displaying a C2C Certified hazard roll-up score along with a detailed C2C Certified hazard profile indicating routes of exposure for human health endpoints and a quick reference to potential safer alternatives.
● Allowing users to see data displayed according to C2C Certified Material Health methodology, the Globally Harmonized System used by the United Nations, or both.
Using the alternative assessment portfolios available through ChemFORWARD, manufacturers will be able to optimize the material health of their products. Users will also receive an indication of a product’s material health performance according to C2C Certified Material Health requirements, positioning them to achieve higher levels of certification.
“Using the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard material health methodology is another step toward the global scaling of safer chemical substitutions and material health optimization for product designers and manufacturers worldwide,” said Stacy Glass, executive director of ChemFORWARD. “Working with the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute to use the Cradle to Cradle Certified Material Health Assessment Methodology is particularly meaningful for ChemFORWARD because of our origin as a project initiated by the Institute. Now that ChemFORWARD is an independent project, we look forward to further collaboration and partnership.”
“ChemFORWARD’s use of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Material Health Assessment Methodology is a mission-critical step toward advancing broad-scale solutions for designing and making products that are both safe and circular,” said Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute President and CEO Peter Templeton. “Our work with ChemFORWARD on this and future initiatives will help further our own efforts to rapidly accelerate the adoption of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard as a tool for optimizing products for the circular economy from molecule to finished material.”
The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is a non-profit dedicated to transforming the safety, health and sustainability of products through the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard. The world’s most advanced, science-based standard for safe and circular materials and products, the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard requires assessment of products across five categories: material health, material reuse, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. Certification is awarded by the Institute at five levels (Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum) based upon a product’s achievement across the categories.
ChemFORWARD, which began as a project of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, is an independent project of the non-profit Healthy Building Network. ChemFORWARD is a value-chain collaboration to advance better chemistry as an essential building block of a safe and circular economy.
